Here we present a joint experimental and theoretical study of xenon atoms irradiated by unprecedentedly high-intensity hard x-rays up to $2\times10^{19}$~W/cm$^2$. Our results show the interplay of relativistic and resonant effects on x-ray multiphoton multiple ionization of heavy atoms and demonstrate the predictive power of the theoretical model, which provides a basis for accurate modeling of radiation damage in XFEL experiments.}
